Update on our Marae

Kia ora e te whanau,

Just a little update on the marae, our Solar energy system is being installed this week. We are excited for this big step towards self sufficiency, and are hoping to one day have Solar energy for our kaumatua/kuia whare as well.

We have started to plant our maara for this next season He kai kei aku ringa, planting delicious peruperu, kumara, pumpkin and much more. If you are keep to help with this please let us know. We are grateful to Sandra Mutu and her whanau for leading this kaupapa for our marae.

Big Brown Wharenui - we had a successful first Wharenui buy a brick fundraiser, thank you to everyone who bought bricks, shared with their whanau so they bought bricks e mihi ana kia koutou. We will be looking to get this mahi underway from this fundraiser as soon as possible.

As many of you will know, our Wharenui has been an unfinished project for many years and our Moemoea for 2024/2025 is to get this whare completed and open. It is likely we will need to complete some of the mahi ourselves but we know Ma Pango Ma Whero Ka oti te mahi. If you have some skills you can offer, or are just keen to help and be apart of the kaupapa please let us know.

We have been applying for funding to help with this kaupapa but we know that many marae and community roopu are looking for often the same types of funding and it can take time for a response or applications can be declined. So we thought lets see we can do as Te Honihoni working together and what mahi we can try and do ourselves.

Although if you would like to make a one off or ongoing koha to this Wharenui project please do so as we we will need every $$ to get this whare open.

One big piece of mahi we know our marae will need to complete is the painting of the Wharenui both inside and out, we are just working through how much paint is needed. If you and your whanau want to purchase a bucket of paint or two or three to contribute to the kaupapa that is an option for whanau as well.

Our plan for the wharenui is to get the whare completed and open, and then look to dressing the whare with toi Maori, Whakairo, Tukutuku and Kowhaiwhai.

We will put out a panui for when we have a karakia to start the renovation mahi on the Wharenui so that whanau can attend.

If you have any questions please let us know.

Nga mihi

Puketawa Marae Komiti.
